Imagine immersing yourself in the wonders of nature, encountering diverse wildlife, and relaxing on pristine beaches – all in just 9 days. Costa Rica offers an amazing travel experience with its rich biodiversity, vibrant culture, and “Pura Vida” lifestyle.
This itinerary covers San Jose, Arenal (La Fortuna), Monteverde, Rio Celeste, and Pacific coast beaches in 9 days. If you wish to see the entire country, you need more than a month. But 9 days is an excellent start to exploring the natural wonders of Costa Rica.
Costa Rica has two seasons: the dry season from late November to April and the rainy season from May to November. To enjoy the best of Costa Rica’s natural wonders and outdoor activities, visiting during the dry season is ideal, as you’ll experience sunny days and minimal rainfall.
However, you don’t mind a little rain. In that case, the “Little Summer” phenomenon, a mini-dry season from mid-July to early August, offers a unique opportunity to explore Costa Rica during its greenest and most vibrant time. With fewer crowds and lower prices, it’s an excellent option for travelers seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience.
Our meticulously planned week Costa Rica itinerary guarantees a well-spent time in this beautiful country. We traveled central to the western part of Costa Rica towards the Pacific Ocean.
We started in the bustling capital of San Jose, then headed to the stunning Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud Forest for adrenaline-pumping adventures. Next, unwind on the beautiful Pacific Coast beaches and surrounding area. To top it all off, we enjoyed water activities along the coast, making this trip an unforgettable Costa Rican experience.
Night stay: San Jose
Costa Rica has two international airports. The San Jose Airport (SJO) is the biggest international airport in Costa Rica and central in the country. The other is Guanacaste Airport (LIR), on the northwest side. If you are planning to visit San Jose, the vibrant capital city of Costa Rica, choose to fly from this airport. You will get more flight options as well, compared to Guanacaste Airport.
Upon arrival in San Jose, pick up your rental car and kick off your trip. The city is rich in culture and history. There are many museums, historical sites, and cathedrals to visit.
At dinner time, savor authentic Costa Rican and delicious cuisines from Latin America. A full day should be sufficient to get the feeling of the urban culture of Costa Rica before heading to the nature-rich countryside.
Night stay: La Fortuna
Get ready for an exhilarating day in La Fortuna, which houses the majestic Arenal Volcano.
It’s about a 2-3 hrs drive from San Jose. Once you arrive at La Fortuna, check in to your hotel and enjoy the beautiful view of Arenal volcano, which is visible from almost every place in this town.
La Fortuna is a charming town in the northern region of Costa Rica, known for its stunning natural beauty and proximity to the iconic Arenal Volcano. Surrounded by lush rainforests, La Fortuna offers a range of outdoor activities, such as hiking, hot springs, and canopy tours.
The town itself is small but bustling, with a friendly atmosphere, colorful buildings, and a variety of restaurants, shops, and accommodations to cater to tourists. The Arenal Volcano, which once erupted regularly, now provides a dramatic backdrop to the town’s landscape, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. With its mix of adventure and relaxation opportunities, La Fortuna is a must-visit destination for those exploring the wonders of Costa Rica.
Head to La Fortuna Waterfall. It’s a short hike from the base to the waterfall, and expect to spend about 2 hours here. There are many hiking trails and scenic spots that can accommodate adventurers and families with kids.
For relaxation, visit Tabacon Hot Springs, a luxurious resort featuring natural hot springs and lush tropical gardens. Alternatively, explore the free hot springs hidden in the nearby river or enjoy the breathtaking views at Lake Arenal, where you can enjoy a soothing soak surrounded by nature.
There are many bars and restaurants in La Fortuna for a fun night out.
Night stay: La Fortuna
After a relaxing day 2, head to Arenal Volcano National Park for an interpretive hike through lava rocks and trails, witnessing the remnants of the volcano’s massive eruption.
Before the day ends, consider visiting Sky Adventure Park for more excitement. You can:
it’s recommended to have an advance reservation for zip-lining and other adventures.
The wildlife walking tour is recommended. A guide knows how to spot slots and other wildlife that may be invisible to tourists like us.
Night stay: Monteverde
On the fourth day, wake up early and head to Rio Celeste. It’s about 1 hour and 30 minutes from La Fortuna and on the way to Monteverde Cloud Forest.
It’s known for its turquoise blue water surrounded by thick, lush forest. It was the most picturesque waterfall we had ever seen. There is a small hike from the base to the waterfall; it may be slightly tricky for a novice hiker, but it’s definitely doable. Once you reach the fall, it’s all worth the effort. You can spend about 2-3 hours here and then head to Monteverde.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest is about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Rio Celeste. It’s one of the most fantastic places among Costa Rica’s natural wonders.
Begin your day with a guided tour of a local coffee plantation, learning about the coffee-making process while sampling some of the finest Costa Rican coffee.
Night Stay: Monteverde
Spend the next day exploring the hanging bridges of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, where you’ll be suspended 45 meters (148 feet) above the forest floor. The reserve is home to many wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, and over 400 bird species, making it a haven for nature lovers.
For a burst of adrenaline, join a canopy tour that includes zip-lining through the lush treetops, or visit the butterfly and hummingbird gardens, where you’ll be surrounded by these colorful creatures.
Then, embark on a nighttime nature walk to spot nocturnal animals, like giant tarantulas and rare orange-bellied trogon birds, in the Curi Cancha Reserve. Again, a guided tour is recommended. It’s worth your time and money in a place like Monteverde to not miss the true beauty this place holds.
Night stay: Guanacaste
After several days of adventure, take a breather at the stunning beaches of Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. From palm-fringed sandy beaches to secluded coves, the Pacific Coast offers something for everyone. Explore the stunning beaches of Guanacaste, Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, and more, where you can lounge under the sun, take surf lessons, or enjoy the laid-back vibes of the coastal towns.
There are many accommodations to choose from close to the Pacific coast, from luxurious to budget-friendly. Visit your local beach and enjoy local restaurants and activities.
We stayed at The Westin Reserva Conchal at Playa Conchal Beach, a beautiful property on a white sandy beach and clear turquoise water, before heading back home. It’s in the Guanacaste and the North Pacific region of Costa Rica.
We relaxed at the resort in the morning, soaking in the sun and swimming cocktails. In the afternoon, we visited the nearby famous coffee and chocolate tour at Café Tio Leo. Advance booking is recommended as these are sold out fast.
Night stay: Guanacaste
Visit the nearest beaches in the area; in Guanacaste, the other famous beaches that are close are Flamingo, Tamarindo, Sugar Beach, and Playa Grande.
We visited Flamingo and Tamarindo; both were amazing and had a lot of options for food and relaxation.
For nighttime, you can stay at the resort or check with hotel staff if any local event is happening close to your area. We found out that every Thursday, there is a festival at Tamarindo Beach called the Tamarindo Night Market Festival.
It lights up the scene every Thursday evening from 6pm to 9pm, featuring live music acts, mesmerizing fire dancers, and entertaining clowns for the little ones. With a DJ spinning tunes, there’s plenty of opportunity to hit the dance floor and have a blast, all in a family-friendly atmosphere – and guess what? It’s totally free!
And when it comes to food, you’re in for a treat. You can savor flavors from around the globe thanks to a diverse selection of food trucks. Plus, you’ll find beautifully crafted souvenirs made right here in Costa Rica, along with a whole bunch of other awesome stuff to explore and enjoy. It’s an evening you won’t want to miss! We had a blast visiting the night festival and were glad we were there on Thursday to enjoy it.
Night stay: San Jose
There are many water activities here, from jet skiing and snorkeling to scuba diving. We went on a catamaran cruise along the coast; the views were stunning, and we watched many wildlife. We also had opportunities for snorkeling or swimming in secluded coves.
There is always something to do if you want to venture farther from the beach. Based on your location, you can visit the nearest rainforest to watch wildlife, hike, and even go for scenic ATV tours.
In the afternoon, we started a long drive back to San Jose to catch an early flight home. Alternatively, you can book a flight from Guanacaste Airport (LIR), only a few hours from the Pacific coast, depending on your location.
Finally, the 9-day journey came to an end. With so much to see and do in Costa Rica, there’s always the option to add more adventures to your itinerary, such as exploring the tranquil beaches of Uvita, venturing into the lush jungles of Tortuguero National Park, or wildlife encounters in Manuel Antonio National Park.
